Creativity is a game

My thoughts on why playing with different mediums is important, and why you shouldn't put yourself in a box.

Throughout my professional life, I’ve often been told to pick a single career path and stick to it - that my curiosity could be my downfall. However, I firmly believe that every creative person benefits from exploring their full range of interests, and there’s no one “right” way to build a successful career.

As a graphic designer, I feel most inspired when I make time for other creative pursuits, whether it’s photography (both analog and digital) or, in the past, jewelry-making. Spending too much time in the digital world can make us lose touch with the joy of creating in real life. Recently, I’ve taken up collage, which is enjoyable in both digital and analog forms. I find analog collage especially challenging and inspiring, as it requires a different way of thinking about proportions and layering.

Ultimately, I believe that stimulating our brains in diverse ways can make us better designers. I’ll end this short blog post with my favorite quote:

“A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
